The Battle of the Books Championships results are in!
4th place went to the Purple Dinosaurs
3rd place went to the Bookie Monsters
2nd place went to the Fire-Breathing Donkeys
And your student champions are the Sparkly Stingrays!
The Crazy 8s (8th grade teachers Mrs. Lathrop, Mrs. Allen, and Mrs. Kniss) won the teacher battle and are the teacher champions.
In the teachers vs.students battle, the Sparkly Stingrays beat the Crazy 8s by 1 point! Therefore, the ERMS Grand Champion for 2015 is the student champion team, the Sparkly Stingrays! Team members were Mikaela Inskeep, Zoe Alexander, Jacob Pampe, Blain Fryman, and Angel Englert. Congratulations to all students and teachers who participated!
Just over 100 ERMS students qualified to attend the championship assembly and were treated to mini candy bars while they watched. All teams were treated to a pizza celebration lunch the day after the matches. Who's already excited for next year?

Our Scholastic Book Fair is well underway and will be open for business until Friday at 1:00 p.m. All proceeds from sales will go toward buying new books for classroom libraries, as well as the ERMS library. I thought this video was appropriate to encourage the purchases of "unread books." It will make your day!

Lynda Mullaly Hunt, author of the 2015 One Book, One Community selection One for the Murphys was in Olney on Tuesday, March 31 to speak to East Richland Middle School students, St. Joseph grade 6-8 students, and interested community members. Her presentation focused on her two books she has released so far, One for the Murphys and Fish in a Tree, as well as tips for being a good writer. Mrs. Hunt also shared how she used the emotion from experiences in her own life to help her write emotional scenes in her books. Her overall message to students, "It's not who you think you are that holds you back, it's who you think you are not," was highlighted throughout her presentations, which concluded with book signing. Other events in the day included a special VIP session for book club students at ERMS and a community book signing at Ophelia's Cup. (Special thanks to ERCU, the Carrie Winter Trust, and ERFAE, for helping to make this event possible.)

Students and adults alike are so excited for Lynda Mullaly Hunt's author visit on Tuesday. All this month, we have had a Book Club through the 5th block after school program. We met for an hour a week at the public library, along with Mrs. Judy Whitaker, the librarian there. We have had so much great discussion over both One for the Murphys and Fish in a Tree!

Happy February! Did you know that love is in the air in the ERMS library? We want to spread the love around, so there are two ways students can earn themselves prizes right now (other than, of course, reading the Caudill books for prizes, which is all year long.)
1.) "All you need is love" featured book display: Choose a book from the display (you will notice the Valentine theme) and pass the AR test. Show us your test results, or have a teacher sign a note, and you will receive valentine candy from us!
2.) "I love my library" hearts: There are blank hearts that you can write on, telling why you love your library. They will be on display the whole month of February. BE SURE TO INCLUDE YOUR FIRST/LAST NAME! At the end of February, all who participated will be entered into a drawing to win prizes!
We hope to see many "lovely" visitors this month!

There is a lot going on here in the ERMS library!
-First of all, we recently started highlighting either an author's birthday, a book's release date, or a day of celebration such as "National Squirrel Day" with a feature display. What a fun, simple way to celebrate books!
-Also, with the recent snow, we are all in a festive spirit, so we have decorated the library! One of the new decorations is a snowman tree. Isn't he cute? But, sadly, he doesn't have a name! So, we are going to hold our first annual "Give our Snowman a Name" library contest! Everyone who enters this contest will get a peppermint candy. The goal is to come up with the most fun, fabulous name for our library friend. The person with the winning name (chosen by the library staff) will receive a peppermint scented bookmark, a poster, and a smencil. Also, we will have a random drawing from the remaining entries not chosen as the winner. Those students drawn will also receive a peppermint scented bookmark. We are looking forward to all of the creative names that will help us spread some cheer during the holiday season! Are you curious what your name would be if you were a snowman? Find out here.

Welcome back, everyone. The school year is well underway, and we have been very busy in the library! This is what has been happening so far...
-The library opened for check-outs after all the iPads were distributed to students.
-Mrs. Leslie visited 6th grade Language Arts classes to introduce them to the library policies and procedures. She also gave them a library tour.
-We ordered and placed over 150 new books on the shelves for student check-out! We also have several new DVDs and Playaways!
-We placed an order for all new magazine subscriptions, which should arrive soon!
-The first ever One Book student selection committee began meeting with Mrs. Leslie. The committee is reading from a short list of books to narrow down the choices for the 2015 One Book, One Community.
-Mrs. Leslie visited all Language Arts classes to teach them how to use the two library apps on their iPads: Destiny Quest (catalog) and Follett Digital Reader (used for digital audio books and e-books).
-The brand new ERMS library website was constructed!
